Raheem Sterling “went to bed fuming” after Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain scored for Liverpool against Manchester City in January.

Liverpool beat City 4-3 to end the champions’ unbeaten Premier League run at the turn of the year, with Oxlade-Chamberlain one of the game’s best players.

The 24-year-old opened the scoring in that game at Anfield, and was also influential in both legs of the Champions League quarter-final against Pep Guardiola’s side.

But it was the game in January where Oxlade-Chamberlain left Sterling “fuming” and “raging” after seeking him out.

Asked by Colossal TV whether he sought out his international teammate after scoring, Oxlade-Chamberlain replied: “On the way back? Course I did.

“I had to let him know I’d arrived. I was in the game, I had to let him know I was in the game.

“It was a big goal and we wanted to go out there, them boys were flying, have a good result and beat them. That set us going.

“I can’t really remember what I was thinking. I was just buzzing.

“But on the way back I was definitely thinking, ‘Where’s Raz?’ I clocked eyes and there wasn’t really much love coming back.

“Little grin maybe. He was fuming, it is what it is. Win some, you lose some.”

Sterling, sat by Oxlade-Chamberlain’s side, corroborated the story.

“I went to bed fuming, because I could see his little face grinning when he came back,” he admitted. “He’s my boy and everything, but I was raging.

“To my team-mates I was like ‘anybody else’, on the day I’d want anyone else to score.”
